Research Travel Grants
Each year the Aceh Research Training Institute (ARTI) offers travel grants for up to ten Indonesian and ten Australian or international doctoral students to conduct their research in collaboration with the Pusat Latihan Penelitian Ilmu Sosial Budaya (PLPISB) of Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. These travel grants are for a period of six months and are funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Myer Foundation. The closing dates for the next round of applications for these travel grants are listed below.
Information on ARTI Research Travel Grants
Information about the benefits, eligibility requirements, application procedure, closing dates, etc. that apply to the travel grants for applicants to conduct research based at the ARTI is provided below.
1. Benefits
Benefits provided by the ARTI travel grant include:
For recipients currently enrolled at an Indonesian institution:
- a living allowance of Rp. 100,000 per day for up to six months;
- a return economy airfare to Banda Aceh;
- a stimulating environment in which to interact with researchers from Aceh and abroad.
For recipients currently enrolled at an Australian or other international institution:
- a return economy airfare to Banda Aceh;
- a counterpart institution (Syiah Kuala University) supporting the research for up to six months;
- a stimulating environment in which to interact with researchers from Aceh, Indonesia and abroad.
2. Obligations
Recipients of an ARTI research travel grant must be willing to:
- work in partnership with researchers in Aceh under the PLPISB;
- assist in the ARTI’s activities including the facilitation of research training courses;
- be resident in Aceh for the majority of the intended research period.
3. Eligibility for travel grant consideration
This section outlines the eligibility requirements to be considered for a travel grant to undertake research in association with the Aceh Research Training Institute.
3.1 Academic requirements
To be considered for an ARTI travel grant, applicants must be currently enrolled in a PhD degree at an Indonesian or international university. The area of study proposed must also meet with the ARTI research priority areas listed below:
1. Legal change, social policy and governance
2. Religious discourse and practice
3. Health
4. Peace, conflict, justice and social recovery
5. Livelihoods, poverty and economic development
3.2 Receipt of other travel grants and salaries
An ARTI travel grant will not be awarded if the applicant is currently receiving another equivalent award, unless approval is granted by the ARTI Australian Project Director.
3.3 Miscellaneous requirements
Applicants who have previously been the recipient of an ARTI travel grant cannot be considered for a second ARTI travel grant.
4. Application procedure and required documents
To be considered for a travel grant, applicants must submit the following required documents to the ARTI Melbourne Office before the relevant closing date:
- Completed application form
- Certified documents (proof of current enrolment, up-to-date academic transcript)
- Referee reports
Incomplete applications (eg. required document/s not provided) and applications received after the closing date will not be considered.
The required documents must be submitted to the ARTI Melbourne Office by the closing date. All documents must be submitted AT THE ONE TIME. Documents should be submitted in hardcopy as well as in electronic form where possible. Applicants will be notified via email or sms of the receipt of the documents.
4.1 Completed application form
Applicants must submit the application form with all sections complete including details on the applicant, the proposed research, other awards received, tertiary qualifications, research experience and academic referees.
4.2 Certified documents
Formal certification of proof of current enrolment and an up-to-date academic transcript is mandatory and can be obtained by providing the original and a photocopy to an appropriate authority for endorsement eg. police officer, Justice of the Peace, solicitor, medical practitioner, school principal or the ARTI Melbourne Office or ARTI Aceh Office.
4.2.1 Proof of current enrolment
In order to be considered for a travel grant, applicants must submit certified proof of current enrolment in a PhD degree at an Indonesian or international university with the other required documents to the ARTI Melbourne Office by the closing date.
4.2.2 Up-to-date academic transcript
Applicants must also provide certified copies of official academic transcripts for all tertiary studies undertaken or currently being undertaken.
The transcripts must include:
- the numeric marks (eg. 84%) or grades (eg. A) obtained. Provision of transcripts that provide actual numeric marks (eg. 85%) or GPAs (eg. 3.4) is strongly recommended.
- a results key (A=80-100%, B=70-79%). This is usually on the back of the transcript and is vital to understanding institutions' grading systems.
4.3 Referee reports
All applicants must submit at least one written academic reference, preferably from the applicant’s direct supervisor. This reference must be completed on a referee report form and be submitted to the ARTI Melbourne Office with all other documents by the closing date. Please ensure the request is sent to referee/s in sufficient time for them to complete.
5. Application closing dates
The closing dates for ARTI research travel grant application rounds are listed below.
While applications are accepted at any time, the ARTI is unable to consider either applications for travel grant received after a closing date or incomplete applications for that particular round. We strongly encourage all applicants to submit their application and all the required documents well before the closing date.

6. Application outcome
Applicants will be advised via email or sms and standard mail as soon as an outcome to their travel grant application is determined. This will usually be within two months of the relevant closing date.
